Dave Wood’s second major perambulatory performance

at Edwinstowe

Dave Wood’s second, major public performance of the Creative Perambulations of Sherwood Forest was held at Edwinstowe Library on the evening of 13^th February 2012. The overall project is funded by National Lottery/Arts Council England.

Opening a bag of walkers’ will never quite have the same meaning from now on; Dave Wood’s creative amble around the 1662 perimeter of Sherwood Forest enabled a huge amount of creative writing and some of it was performed the night before Valentine’s day at Edwinstowe Library.

The upper deck of the library bubbled with laughter and ooh-ing and ah-ing as Dave Wood (a strawberry blond but losing it at the back) performed a great giggle and gaggle of poetry and story. He had produced and collected the creativity on his project, all of it online at http://creativesherwoodforestperambulations.blogspot.com/.

Dave says, both walkers and participants donated and inspired all kinds: haiku, tanka, rhyme, acrostics, story…it was a great evening for reflecting on the walk which ended November 5^th 2011 [end quote].

A quick thanks to the library service too for hosting this bag of walkers…of all kinds of flavours!

Free Perambulations Poetry Performances

Dave is Adamant…

Poems and stories from Dave Wood’s mammoth creative walking and writing project, the Creative Perambulations of Sherwood Forest [funded by National Lottery/Arts Council England] will be performed (free) at two venues during the month of February.

Stand and deliver! (woah woah woah)

After an incredible community walking journey around the 1662 border of Sherwood Forest, collecting and creating poems, artwork and stories, Nottinghamshire writer, Dave Wood is ready to deliver the fruits of his labours to two more venues. And yes, he’s jolly excited about it and adamant (geddit?) that you should be too.

Dave says, ‘If you’re fascinated by Nottinghamshire, its people and want to hear some fresh and zesty creativity, come along and bring some friends…this is the first of its kind…2012 marks the 350^th anniversary of the last beating of Sherwood Forest’s bounds…[end quote].

Aliens, Robin Hood and Poetree

Instant Theatre Teleports to Stapleford

On 30^th January 2012, Stapleford Carnegie Centre hosted the first of a trio of performances of the poetry that came out of Dave Wood’s Creative Perambulations of Sherwood Forest. Afterwards, Dave and Liz also enabled the audience to create and act in its own Instant Theatre play.

This site is not a play area! rapped Dave (Wood) and Liz (Reeve) as part of the industrial estate (t)rap; one of a series of poems performed at The Stapleford Carnegie Centre (Stapleford Town Council have supported the project from the outset) to celebrate the Creative Perambulations of Sherwood Forest [funded by National Lottery/Arts Council England].

The site, though, did become a play area in more ways than one…

After Liz and Dave’s performance of the poems, tea, biscuits and coffee was scoffed (thanks to the Town Council for the consumables!), the audience then got on with their own creativity, via Instant Theatre.

Through a series of neutral, seemingly random questions, Liz enabled the group to create their own unique ‘tree myth’ (not mythter!) based around the recently, locally planted sapling grown from the Major Oak. Folks imagined the story of the area in three hundred years time, an era of a vast continent covered in gloopy mist and an alien called Bob teleporting its way to the front of the tourist queue to touch the Virgin Oak (so called because of its Branson connections, apparently).

Members of the audience came out to represent all kinds of parts: alien arms, the tree, marshmallows, fire and brains. I guess you had to be there; so I’m attaching a photo…

Dave says, ‘Liz came all the way from Dorset to help out; it was magical to watch the story quickly evolving…and I thoroughly enjoyed playing the part of Bob the alien…’ [quote end].

Second’s out…count to tree

Historic second Sherwood Perambulations Performance to be at Edwinstowe

On 13^th February 2012 (6.30pm – 7.30pm), Nottinghamshire’s Dave Wood will be performing selections of poetry and other creativity gathered on his Creative Perambulations of Sherwood Forest at Edwinstowe Library, Edwinstowe, Nottinghamshire. Entrance is free and there will be a BSL interepreter throughout. If you have already been to the Stapleford or Nottingham performance, there will be different poems to enjoy during the evening.

Have you twigged yet? Dave Wood will be performing and gallivanting his way through poetry gathered on his Creative Perambulations of Sherwood Forest, a roughly ninety mile walk which he completed November 5^th 2011.

Dave has been busy compiling the poems over the Xmas and new year period (no rest for a poet) as well as writing his own interpretation of the walk as a gargantuan 16000 word saga. He’s also bringing together a broadsheet of poems ready to distribute later in the year.

Dave, patiently waiting for his hundredth birthday in fifty four years time, says, I suppose you could say I’m ‘bushed’…there are so many ‘branches’ and ideas to follow up… audiences should get ‘boled’ over with the free performance…[end quote]

Like the other two performances in Nottingham/shire, this one will include a British Sign Language Interpreter. Every performance from the Perambulations will contain different poems, so come along to all three if you can*. Children are welcome.

2012 marks the 350^th year since the previous walk in 1662.

Perambulations Performance is set free

Stapleford hosts writing project’s first performance

On 30^th January 2012, there will be a free performance of the poems and other creative pieces which came out of Dave Wood’s historic Perambulation around the old Sherwood Forest Boundary, a walk previously completed in 1662. The first part of the celebratory afternoon will include British Sign Language Interpretation. The afternoon will conclude with a piece of Instant Theatre; the audience being storytellers, actors and/or audience of their own play.

Results! Dave Wood’s Creative Perambulations of Sherwood Forest finally show their creative colours; the first of three (free) showings of the poems and creativity which came out of the project will be performed at Stapleford Carnegie Centre on 30^th January 2012. Come for 1.45pm to start at 2pm. The performance lasts an hour and includes British Sign Language Interpretation. It’s suitable for all ages and smiles. This will be followed by refreshments.

Then hang around for the marvellously quirky and original, instant theatre at 3.30pm. I.T only needs people to make it happen. It’s a great opportunity for people to create and act in their own play.

Dave says, Instant Theatre was invented by R G Gregory and toured throughout Britain and Europe by Word And Action (Dorset) Ltd. It’s a pleasure to bring in two actors, Liz and Sue, who were with the company, all the way from the south coast [end quote}. There will be no BSL for this section.

The form is open to all ages and you can always sit back and watch the fun; people can enjoy playing the parts of characters, objects and the weather. Bring your imaginations and leave your umbrella at the door… It’s amazing what can be done in sixty minutes.

There’ll be refreshments on the go; with support from Stapleford Town Council.

Everything’s Oak-ay says Poet

Sapling grown from Major Oak to be planted in Stapleford

To mark the end of Stapleford poet, Dave Wood’s Creative Perambulations of Sherwood Forest, there will be a sapling grown from the Major Oak planted on Ilkeston Road Recreation Ground, Stapleford. The project is funded by Arts Council England and The National Lottery.

All’s oak-ay at Stapleford Town Council. Never one to miss the chance to celebrate the achievements of one of their own residents, Stapleford Town Council was thrilled to have the chance to plant a sapling grown from the Major Oak in honour of the completion of Dave Wood’s recent gargantuan, creative travels.

Dave has recently finished walking and writing around the 1662 Perambulation route of Sherwood Forest; enabling poetry, story reflecting the people and landscape of the areas.

Dave says, ‘Now I’m back home, I have to keep the blog, facebook and twitter up to date. I’m still being sent articles and poems too…' he ends. He's currently writing a saga to reflect the walk, all in rhyme...at ten beats a line, it takes some pondering.

The Sherwood Pines Partnership Tree Nursery, which grows the trees, enables adults with learning needs gain valuable work experience, increase their confidence and self esteem and help them live a more independent and fulfilling life. There is currently a consultation document online http://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/supportedemploymentconsultation.htm in which the public is invited to respond to potential cutbacks to the Supported Employment Programme (closing of the nursery is one of the elements highlighted). Dave would also be keen to hear your views; enabling him to include it in his final creative portfolio.

Smile and say Treeeees

Poet-tree Perambulation of Sherwood Forest now over

Dave Wood ended the walking section of his Creative Perambulation of Sherwood Forest on November 5^th 2011 with the plantings of two trees grown from the Major Oak. The project is supported by Arts Council England and The National Lottery.

Say ‘Trees’, and the crowds that gathered, smiled, grinning with the satisfaction that they had been part of the support network for Dave Wood’s Creative Perambulation of Sherwood Forest. The original walk around Sherwood Forest was last completed in 1662; almost 350 years ago; bear in mind, Dave wasn’t there originally…

By the end of the day, twenty three people had come along to help and to be part of the process; one tree planting at the Victoria Embankment and the other at The Hook Nature Reserve in Lady Bay. The latter tree was donated free by The Sherwood Forest Trust , an organisation keen to be included in the process of the walk. Both trees were nurtured by Sherwood Pines Partnership Tree Nursery, a partnership between The Sherwood Forest Trust and Nottinghamshire Country Council. Both trees were grown from acorns from the Major Oak in, what most would deem, the heart of the forest.

City Mayor, Mick Wildgust and Stapleford Town Mayor, Ray Darby were present at the first planting, but Mr Wildgust had to leave early to get to another engagement. Three human trees from The Woodland Trust also came a-walking [see photograph] and personally gave away eight trees at the final planting.

Dave says, It’s been astounding, I’ve been gifted with company on every walk; even the really difficult ones…it makes you look so differently at Nottinghamshire, its landscape/s and its heritage…it’s been quite an adventure; talking to locals, being creative and absorbing myself into the culture…he ends.

His shenanigans are not over yet; he has a little more space to offer workshops, will be producing a broadsheet and giving three exciting performances in the city and the county.

On the last day of all days (Nov 5th) there were two tree plantings in celebration of the project funded by Arts Council England/National Lottery as well as poems (of course).

The last section of the Perambulations is

2^nd – Walking Lowdham to Burton Joyce (shortish road walk) start 10.30am from The Magna Charta. Afterwards, I’ll be running a free impromptu writing session at venue to be confirmed; you may want to buy a tea/coffee etc. There’s also a heritage trail in Burton Joyce which will more than likely inspire.

3^rd – Walking Burton Joyce (from the Cross Keys Pub) to Colwick (along the Trent) possible birdwatching in Colwick. Start 11am

4^th – drop in workshop in Burton Joyce library; creating poetry bunting about Sherwood Forest.

5^th – Celebratory last day of walking Colwick to Victoria Embankment - includes tree planting ceremonies at V.E and The Hook Nature Reserve. Walk starts at car park near Mile End, Colwick, near to play area (look for the two white bridges). Bring binoculars if you have them. The walk will start in the glorious country park, continue by the race course and end its journey along a pavemented busy road. Gather a little before to start walking at 10am.

For trees a jolly good fellow - poet on his last leg

Final section of Perambulations finishes on 5^th November – b’dang!

Poet, Dave Wood’s vibrant Nottinghamshire, community, heritage and arts project, The Creative Perambulations of Sherwood Forest (funded by Arts Council England and The National Lottery) is on the home run; the journey of some 90 miles will come to an end 5^th November 2011.

Pull your socks up! The Creative Perambulations is on the home run; Dave Wood would like as many of those that have joined him previously along the old perimeter of Sherwood Forest plus anyone else who fancies a pootle to walk the last sections with him. The final stretch will be roughly three miles, from Colwick to Victoria Embankment.

Dave, just turned forty six, says, There’s some really short walks and few slots of for free creative workshops, if you’re situated anywhere between Oxton and Victoria Embankment, We already have people coming along dressed as trees; what about dressing as Robin hood, Maid Marian… ? he ends.

If you can’t walk with him, be ready to help provide the welcoming committee at Victoria embankment or The Hook Nature Reserve on Lady Bay, where Dave will be enabling the planting of two trees native to Sherwood Forest supplied via The Sherwood Forest Trust. Shoe-shine in sunshine in New Ollerton

Guest artist of Perambulations becomes shoe-shine boy

This year, international artist Bill Drummond has been plying his trade as a shoe-shine boy in various cities around the world including Beijing, Venice and Rotterdam. Next month he will be on the streets of Berlin. But this week he has been in the wilds of rural Nottinghamshire.

On Monday 4^th October, Drummond, as part of Dave Wood’s National Lottery and Arts Council England funded project, Creative Perambulations of Sherwood Forest, strolled from Bilsthorpe to Oxton, getting a feel for the area.

On the Tuesday morning, Drummond moved on to New Ollerton and got down to work as part of the same scheme; he set up as a ‘shoe-shine boy’ on Forest Road, New Ollerton. While polishing numerous of the local’s shoes, topics of conversation ranged widely – from the best way to cook a hare to the perfect chat up line. In between the banter, Drummond never forgot to whistle while he worked.

Dave says… One satisfied customer even bought him some freshly baked cakes from the local bakery. Bill was also quite happy to share his rewards, he ends.

International artist and musician joins historic perambulations

International artist and musician, Bill Drummond will be joining Dave Wood’s historic Creative Perambulations of Sherwood Forest. He will come for two days only; performing http://www.the17.org/scores/395 whilst en route on the 3^rd and another to be confirmed on the 4^th. The Perambulations are supported by National Lottery and Arts Council England

Whistle while you work…

On 3^rd October, while walking from Bilsthorpe, well known author, musician and creative, Bill Drummond will perform his own score 395 while on the Creative Sherwood Forest Perambulations as guest of Nottinghamshire writer, Dave Wood. Bill is also offering to run a free session on 4^th October; we’re not saying what it is yet…

Dave says…It’s great to have Bill on board, I met him through his community and artist project based at The Tower in Cushendall (N.Ireland), when myself and visual artist, Kurt Bosworth collaborated on a giant jigsaw for the people of the area, he ends.

It’s all over now for poetry…
Dave goes to the top of his perambulation route and down the other side

Poet, Dave Wood, funded by the National Lottery <http://www.national-lottery.co.uk/player/p/home.ftl> and Arts Council England <http://www.artscouncil.org.uk/> , is continuing on his creative ramble around the 1662 perimeter of Sherwood Forest. From Market Warsop to Clumber (September 27th) then Clumber to New Ollerton (28th September), going from New Ollerton to Bilsthorpe on 30th September then (after some time in the locale) proceeeding on 3rd October 2011 when he heads to Farnsfield. He’d like you to join him. He'll be writing and encouraging others to contribute all kinds of ideas about their area and community.

It’s a bit over the top; Dave Wood is ready to reach the top of the 1662 perambulation route of Sherwood Forest, walking from Market Warsop to Clumber Park on 27th September then from there to New Ollerton on the following day. Section by section, he’ll be travelling down the east side and then (finally) along the bottom of the city to return to Victoria Embankment. Subject to circumstances, poet, Dave Wood is now able to tell everyone where he’ll be and on what date on his National Lottery/Arts Council England funded Perambulations project.

Flick open you diaries for a date with a poet; Dave Wood has been sweating over his Apple, pulling together the dates he’ll be touring the 1662 Perambulations route of Sherwood Forest. Perambulatory Poet plans his Annesely to Market Warsop walk

Dave Wood, funded by the National Lottery through Arts Council England is now getting ready for the fourth section of his Perambulations around the 1662 map of Sherwood Forest. The first five to turn up get an ice cream and a free poem.

Dave Wood is now planning his September escapades; his creative Perambulations around the 1662 map of Sherwood Forest is gathering a steady pace as he’s entering the north westerly regions of Nottinghamshire. He wants you to join him.

After his sojourn in Annesely in the last days of August, he’ll be setting off to Kirkby on 1^st September at 10am from the Badger Box Pub Car Park. A lot of it will be road and street walking with views of modern day architecture and town dwellings.

Dave says, The 2^nd September, nine mile section is far greener; Skegby to Market Warsop goes into country park, heritage sites and follow the River Meden for a while too. At one point we’ll pass St Chad’s in Pleasley Vale which has its own legend…he ends. He is currently negotiating a workshop facilitator to talk about tree energies en route. The first five to turn up get a free ice cream and poem! He wants you to join him walking and if you’d like to, donate some creativity too. AND fancy dress is also welcome.

Special Branch gets Perambulating
…even the trees get their boots on.

At least twenty five eager participants turned up at the Hook Nature Reserve in Lady Bay.for The Creative Perambulations of Sherwood Forest, a project organised by Nottinghamshire’s writer, Dave Wood. The National Lottery funded project is allowing all kinds of groups and individuals to gain access to creativity as well as joining in the old boundary walk, last done in 1662. The grant came via Arts Council England.

Tree-mendous, that’s what it was. Twenty five (at least) came along to the Hook Nature reserve in Lady Bay to wish their best to the new perambulators of the old Sherwood Forest; a project devised by Notts Writer, Dave Wood which brings creativity together with healthy walking, performance and ecology. The walk will take in the 1662 boundary of Sherwood Forest and will be done in stages, allowing Dave to blog, twitter and reflect on his travels.

The first section of the walk (Victoria Embankment to Hucknall Road) was completed on 30^th July. The second (Hucknall Raod to Linby Cross) was undertaken the following Monday.

Dave says, It was brilliant. We had an excellent turnout on a roasting hot day. Two campaigners from the Woodland Trust joliied things along by dressing as trees and keeping the energy bubbling, he ends. It was mostly city walking, so a pat on the back to all.

July 30th 2011 at 12.30 is when I set off on my Sherwood Forest Perambulations from Victoria Embankment (near the Riverbank Bar/kitchen). Get in touch 077*099*776*84 or davewrite2002[at]yahoo.com. IMPORTANT! Whatever your beliefs, this is not a political march or protest; this is a walk of historical significance that draws on the community and its creativity.

Please read (at the very least) the 'Welcome' section.

On joining the walk, bear in mind you are responsible for your own health and safety. If you bring a dog, please be aware that other walkers may not get on with them. Keep dogs on leads and clear up after you. There will be some form filling to do before we set off; please consider whether you wish to be photographed (and for the image to be used by us) as well as thinking about your health (are you well enough to do the distance?)

On that morning, there was a pre-walk event/blessing at the Hook Nature Reserve in Lady Bay at 10am. We met at Holme Grove, ten or so minutes before. It was open to the public to attend/. We walked roughly 6 and half (mostly city) miles and joining Wildlife in the City about 6pm (see further down).

If you wish to continue a-rambling, we will carry on into the Linear Walkway (some gravel path/some natural woodland) for a short while with the WITC and Heather Smith (local bodger)

Walk number two (Linear Walkway to Linby). We'll gather at the Junction of Bestwood Road and Hucknall Road coming from Bulwell. There is a set of steps up into a nature reserve.

Please let me know as soon as possible if you have difficulties walking especially if you use a wheel chair. As ever, this is a linear walk; you need to plan in your return journey.

From Bestwood Park Drive West on the opposite side to where the last walk ended on Hucknall Road, there is a pathway into a wooded area. This is the Linear Walkway. Carry on; immediately being aware of ruts, potholes, puddles, dog mess, dogs, horses/horse mess, cyclists, low hanging branches, slopes, uneven ground, walkers, nettles, brambles, runners and detritus. O happy walking.

Continue along here and when you get to a coloured totem pole, take a right. You come to a semi circular metal gate- go through – in 200 yards there’s a bench. You’ll get to a slope in front of you, don’t go up, turn left.

This is a very poor path; wheel ruts and mud and puddles especially. The path runs alongside another yellow one (gravel). Cut through the gap in the hawthorn on your right. Go through and continue the direction you were going. Slopes and horse poo along here. Follow the road to the left (slight slope). Watch for horse riders. Go up the slope then down and you’ll see a black rock to your left. This is an audio trail marker. Take a left downwards – this is bumpy with a forked path. Take the right and you’ll eventually see the old Winding House. Skirt left around another black rock and you’ll see the car park. There is a gate which can be accessed by those in wheelchairs with a scanning key. Otherwise there is a section which can be stepped over. On the main road, take a right, passing Broad Valley Drive . At the end, there is no sloped drop off the pavement and then the causeway runs out. This is farm road now; expect wide vehicles, cars and horseriders (and the mess). There is sometimes a café in the horse stables yard (if there are enough walkers, she will be there especially for us).

Continue along passing Bestwood Country Park Sign; you are now on Main Drive. Passing Woodman’s Cottage you’ll see an archway in front where the ranger works. Pass a gray looking activities building on the right. Just before the archway there is a slope near a notice board. Turn up and branch left. The pathway is precarious; sandy soiled, horse mess, stones and steep slope with ruts. Keep going up. It keeps getting rockier. After 50 yards it levels out. Continue along the slope; it then levels out again and we get to a bench on the left.

Just before a crossroads, you’ll come to a stile and a gap. Take the left at the crossroads. There’s a step over (a kind of half gate) as well as a semi-circle gate). there is farmland on both sides. You’ll be on fairly level (gravelled) ground with some potholes.

You’ll get to two types of metal gate and a narrow gap through. This takes you in to Lamins Lane, which is tarmac'd. You come to non pavemented road again – so watch out for traffic. You’ll pass a mushroom farm on left (there are some benches on the opposite side). You come to a barrier with a sign for Kiillarney Park . Go round it (through a narrow gap) and skirt left. Follow the main road down the slope. The area is very floral and has lots of those (non) mobile homes that look like bungalows. There is no pavement, but at least it’s not very busy. Continue down the tarmac and onto an uneven path at the end (look for a finger post on your right – with a yellow and a green arrow). Bear left and up the slope. Watch out for wheel ruts, bramble and potholes. The path bears right. Down the slope, at the white rusting gate, continue on path, passing farm buildings. There are some donkeys (if they’re out) on your left. At the bottom of the hill at the farm buildings, follow to the left. Up ahead, there’s a model aviation museum. On the left after 100 yards is a field of crops (brassicas). Over the road bump, follow on (there’s a gate to the conference hall on the right. Bear left and see sign for Goosedale and a cricket ground on right. Go to the end of Goosedale lane to the junction of Moor road.

You’ll have been walking for about three and a half hours plus your picnic time.

This is where it gets really scary. Take a right and onto the non-pavemented Moor Road. There will probably be some road crossing so it’s a bit safer. Bring fluorescent jackets if you’ve got them. After approx’ a mile of precarious walking and avoiding ditches, the pavement will re-appear, though this is just a line to denote one. This will run out again on your right; cross over where there’s a gate/gap into a field. Continue along the pavement. Watch out for pavement parkers and crossing any side streets. Pass by signs for Papplewick Trail and go over Papplewick lane. The footpath narrows here; watch out for horse poo and branches. Turn left at the major crossroads where you’ll see the Griffins Head on the opposite side.

Keep on the left side (after roughly a quarter of a mile, there’s no pavement on the right). Keep going (some residential area, so pavement parkers). It will chop and change between field and housing. Eventually you’ll get to Linby Cross, where we’ll gather ourselves and say well done for completing the second section. Those that wish to can come to the Horse and Groom (sorry, you’ll have to buy your own). Full walk is approximately five to six miles

From small acorns…Creativity gets its walking boots on

Dave sets the date for the Perambulations to start

Dave Wood has set the start off date of his National Lottery funded project, the Creative Perambulations of Sherwood Forest; he’ll be setting off from Victoria Embankment on 30^th July 2011, mid day, after a gathering and blessing at the Hook Nature Reserve, close by at 10am. Keep an eye on the blog for more details; bear in mind these could change.

Like the kaboom of creativity itself, Dave Wood releases the date for this historic walk around the 1662 Perambulation Map of Sherwood Forest. The funding, through Arts Council England, allows him to undertake the walk, while facilitating writing sessions, producing his own body of imaginative work and bringing it all together as three celebratory performances at the end; a massive and joyful task.

On Saturday, 30^th July 2011, at 10am, there’ll be a short gathering at the Hook Nature Reserve, then off to meet other well-wishers and walkers at 12 noon at Victoria Embankment.

Dave says, I’ve had a huge response from the folks of Nottinghamshire and emails are still rolling in; all I need is sunshine (not too much) on the day…he ends.

Dave is still looking for local historians to be involved; if you’ve got a passion for the past and would like to walk to the future, get in touch. Dave is ever welcoming of those who want to walk, be creative, get chatting and give him input for the project. Perambulating at last!

Creative walk funded through Arts Council England

Dave Wood has received notification of funding for his breath-taking, creative project around the old Perambulation map of Sherwood Forest. He plans to start walking the end of July 2011 and complete the last leg in November/December this year. Final results will be performed in January 2012.

Pen in hand and bootlaces tied, poet and writer, Dave Wood is pine-ing (groan) to get started on his tree project; he plans to walk the old perimeter of Sherwood Forest, last undertaken in 1662, produce his own body of imaginative work as a response whilst encouraging others on the route to join in with the walking, the creativity and the fun. So far, he’s feeling Oak-ay (groan nr 2).

He says, now I have the funding through Arts Council England [from The Lottery Fund] it means I can start to really organise the project to its full potential and encourage those on the ‘Perambulations’ route to host some free creative workshops, the results of which can be fed into Facebook, Twitter and the dedicated blog’, he ends.

Of course, you may just want to chat with Dave about your local area, a favourite tree or your environment. You may want to help him plant a sapling en-route; the project is supported in kind by The Sherwood Forest Trust who are keen for the public to be more pro-active in looking after their trees and getting more interested in the heritage of the forest.

Dave recently talked about his walk on one of their tree planting days at a school; reading a specially created poem, helping children measure The Parliament Oak, keeping neutral in a mock Royal debate and facilitating a tree-blessing workshop.

Poet plans Perambulations Project around Sherwood Forest

Dave Wood, Nottinghamshire poet, is planning a walk around the old Perambulation route of Sherwood forest, last done in the seventeenth century. This time it will take a creative angle.

Hold on to your saplings…poet, wordsmith and community arts worker, Dave Wood is planning to follow the route of the old Perambulations of Sherwood Forest, last done in the 17^th century.

This time, the plan is much more than about setting down the boundaries and making copious notes; it’s about alerting people to their own creativity, their environment and having fun with their imagination. Dave started working in the creative industries in 1988 and has seen its positive effects on all kinds of people.

He wants to cross fertilise his own poetic output with working alongside others to create a massive body of imaginative work reflecting modern day communities whilst using the original route.

He says, Even if the place I’m walking through has nothing left of the old forest, we can reflect on all kinds of things; favourite trees, their own stories of the natural (and built) environment and of course, make up some stories of Robin Hood too, he ends.

The Sherwood Forest Trust, have already offered their support by dovetailing it with their Special Trees Project.

Access
Parts of the original Perambulation will not necessarily be wheelchair or disabled friendly. If you do have mobility issues, please let me know in advance and I can research the route you'd like to go on to see if it is suitable. I will, as far as possible make the workshops as accessible as I can. Funding allowing, during the performances of the completed work, I will use a highly experienced British Sign Language Interpreter.

I've finally contacted the United Nations (International Year of the Forest). More soon.

On 5th May 2011, I contacted Carousel30 Interactive (Washington, DC | Chicago) about International Year of the Forest; they want to host the photographs from the Perambulations.
